English Department

This is the home page for the English department at Pathways School.

Key Stage 3

Throughout key stage 3 students will have the opportunity to study both fiction and non-fiction texts, drama texts and also poetry.

Below is a sample of the texts studied:

Year 7
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

Year 8
Holes by Louis Sachar

Year 9
Stone Cold by Robert Swindell

The year 9 students will be working towards the completion of their SATS. This will involve them studying the reading and writing of fiction and non-fiction and also a Shakespeare play. This year’s class will study Romeo and Juliet.

Key Stage 4

All students will follow the GCSE English Language course. This involves the students completing coursework on-

  • Other Cultures poetry analysis
  • Narrative Writing
  • Persuasive/ Informative Writing
  • Shakespeare analysis
  • Pre-1914 poetry analysis
  • Pre-1914 prose analysis

 

For GCSE English Language, the coursework completed will make up 40% of the student’s final GCSE grade and then completion to the highest standard is essential.

There are 2 GCSE English Language exam papers and each paper lasts 2 hours.
